I am also deeply in love with this Ralph Lauren lace skirt. When it is on sale . . .

Kidding! Or maybe it's the fear of looking too Church Lady, too stuffy, too Miss Havisham:
I think the best way to introduce lace items to my wardrobe would be a clean-lined blouse like this one. It's not fussy or Old-Lady, and it's not Bridal. I do like ivory next to my face. To stay modern, I'd pair it with a slim skirt or . . . a pair of jeans? And keep the accessories clean: simple earrings or bracelet, watch, and ring.

I also have been ogling lace-covered skirts like this one from Talbots (yes, Talbots). Here I would want to pair it with a simple knit top, even an upscale tee, to avoid the Bridal or worse, Mother of the Bride look. Maybe a pair of sleek boots too.
Do you wear lace? How do you work it into your style and how do you accessorize? Or is it hopelessly inappropriate for the 40- and 50-something working woman? Please let me hear your thoughts, and have a lovely, lacy day.

I think I'm similar to you on this one. Lace is beautiful, but I never wear it because I just don't feel like it's "me." It's either too romantic or too Goth, if that makes sense! Plus it's often white or black -- neither being the best colors on me. So I tend to just stay away.
ReplyDeleteI'm the same - love it, don't own it. I love the look of lace over a color. I love brights, and black lace over a bright color tends to be too . . . bordello. And then there's the scratchiness factor - too many lace fabrics are primarily polyester. I'm still on the lookout for the right lace.
ReplyDeleteI have a great lace vintage dress that my mom gave me.I prefer to admire it than wearing it.But you got me thinking and I'll try to incorporate lace details in my wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, because I actually love lace.....when I see it on someone else. On me, it just feels TOO precious....especially on top. But I love the lace skirts you showed...I think I could do something with them! I think you're right on about keeping accessories minimal OR you could do a really simple but bold necklace...I think that would look FABULOUS! Big hug to a kindred spirit! ~Serene
ReplyDeleteHi PAtti - i think your ideas on styling lace outfits are great! i've always had lace in my wardrobe, i do the "tough and tender" thing, wearing it with jeans, khaki, beat up boots. STAshworth makes a good point about scratchy laces (blearhg!), but i'm finding a lot more cotton today (my fave!) as well as nylon, rayon, and blends.
ReplyDeletelet us know if you take the plunge and how it turns out! steph
Anne - it makes perfect sense! Lace is not an "everyday" fashion choice, for sure.
ReplyDeleteSTAshworth - Welcome and thanks for reading! Yes, itchy = no go.
Angie - I am sure the vintage dress is beautiful. Some dresses *are* more for admiring, due to practical concerns. But beautiful all the same.
Serene - yes, "precious" is not a look we are going for, is it? : > I think you would look wonderful in the Lauren lace skirt, with one of your signature belts.
Steph - Thank you! I do enjoy the ways you mix your fabrics, you really have the gift of the skilled seamstress.
I love lace, and I don't care if it is appropriate or not, that is one of the things I am stubborn with. I do try to keep it modern.
ReplyDeleteHi Lesa! It's grand to wear what we love, and to be "stubborn" about it - it's what makes us the interesting women that we are. : >
