Today I chose the second gift that wonderful Sheila (of Ephemera) sent me (see the first one here): a yummy silk blouse by Talbots. It fits me perfectly, thank you Sheila! And in her honor, I am pattern-mixing it with my favorite hounds-tooth midi skirt. I am actually assigning this skirt to the "Neutrals" category, because it "goes" with every darn top in my closet. Whee, breaking rules at my advanced age!
A belt pulls the look together, I think. I am also showing my little GAP faux-fur jacket as a topper. I thrifted it a couple of years ago, and I love to pull it out of the closet for the 6 - 10 cool days we have down here. For footwear, boots of course. As long as I can extend boot season on either side of the calendar, I will do it!
I read in one of my fashion/style books that when wearing boots with a skirt the "rule" is: for form-fitting skirts, show a little skin (or hose) between the hem of the skirt and the top of the boot. For full skirts, like mine, it's OK to have the skirt cover the top of the boot. What do you say?

Now, I would love to see what you are wearing this holiday weekend - did you buy something new/old and fabulous on Super-Shopping Friday??
The guidelines to participate in the Visible Monday Link-Up are so simple!
- Any Monday, whoever wants to can join in! Just compose a post that includes any outfit, accessory, piece of jewelry, hairstyle, cosmetic or other adornment that makes you feel more confident, alive and visible that day.
- Include a link to Not Dead Yet Style somewhere in your post.
- Go to the bottom of this post and click on this cute little link:

Nice pose! :-D
ReplyDeleteI think they are right on about the rule about the boots.
ReplyDeleteLove this print with the hounds tooth--I agree--this is almost like a neutral!
I think the boots look great with the longer skirt. I wear an above the knee denim pencil skirt with tall boots and no tights - just bare knees. I had a reader tell me that wasn't a good look on me, but I happen to like it. I am so glad to read that your book and you think it's just fine!
ReplyDeleteI am loving Visible Monday...and I added your button to my blog :)
Adrienne
I love the blouse and Shelia always has such great pieces!! I also like your hair...great cut!!
ReplyDeleteThe blouse and skirt look fabulous together! I think you're right about that boots/skirt guideline.
ReplyDeletePopping over from Adrienne's site. What a great blog. I will enjoy reading.
ReplyDeleteyou have that glow again! wow! I wish I could get some of that ...
ReplyDeleteYou look great in that outfit. To me black, white and red almost always works and you look is no exception. No need for the gap at all with a long skirt!
ReplyDeleteI'm beginning to suspect that the only reason any of us even reads the rules is so we can break them!
ReplyDeleteI love your PATTERN CLASHIN, AND YES i AM JOINING YOU.

Love the mix of red and black and the patterns, don't see any clashing here. I've also long been a fan of long skirts and boots. As to the shorter skirt/boot "rule" I tend to say "it depends".
ReplyDeleteYou look wonderful in red & black...very classy. Linking up again this week. Finally figured out how to post your link!
ReplyDeleteabsolutely fabulous! I love the fur coat for some glamour. The blouse is beautiful, how nice to receive it from a friend. Yes, maxi skirt over boots is great, thanks for hosting by the way!

I think the top & skirt go great together. I've never heard that skirt + boot rule but it kind of makes sense, seems like it could get bulky otherwise. But rules are meant to be broken you should try it some time ;)
ReplyDeleteI have you in my blogroll now, so I will be in contact.

You look great Patti as always! Happy Monday!
ReplyDeleteThanksgiving Outfit
I am SO envious of that Gap jacket. The only word I can think of is: "yummy."
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, houndstooth is definitely a neutral! you look great, and good call with the boots.
ReplyDeleteRed looks nice on you. Sheila chose a cute top for you.
ReplyDeleteThe ladies are lovely ! i am suppose to mention you on my blog i think... i do not see my link to your Visible Monday...well maybe when I return..
ReplyDeleteThe blouse is nice Patti goes well with the skirt, it is a nice shirt, so versatile and they are right about the boot rule!
Ariane
The top and jacket go together beautifully. Love your WendyB pose :). Thanks again for featuring these lovely ladies in their visible Monday outfits.
ReplyDeleteHi Patti,
ReplyDeleteI tried to add a pic of my snakeprint sweatshirt but can't. I am a bit of a technophobe!
Count me as another big belt fan! Especially when I'm separating two contrasting prints, I think a belt helps to make the outfit cohesive!
ReplyDeleteI will do it for you!!
ReplyDeletePatti, I had to look very closely at your belt as it looked familiar to me. I have the same belt in white. I love it in black too. I read that it was from Gap so I know that it is the same one. Anyway, I love your advice about the boots and skirt combo...good lookin out for us Patti, thanks for that. Great look on you, styled like a pro. Love, love the coat...can I have it? Wrap it up for xmas...my address is listed below. Ha! Thanks for hosting. Dawn Suitcase Vignettes xo
ReplyDeleteI just love the skirt that you are wearing! The print is busy, but it doesn't overwhelm you.

I love this outfit. That blouse is beautiful. You did an excellent job of pattern mixing. I think houndstooth is a neutral that looks good with so many things.
ReplyDeleteI have a similar jacket from Chico's, but it is still too warm to wear it. I like to just look at it hanging in the closet.
I like the skirt length and the boot height. It looks very classic and classy.
Rules...we don't need no stinkin' rules! Well, maybe some. I had never heard about the boot /skirt/skin thing. I like how your skirt falls over the tops of the boots.
ReplyDeletehope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving and i'm loving your pattern mixing. very fab!
ReplyDeleteClaire
Patti, I'm so glad you like that top - it was one of my favourites! I am also pretty sure I wore it with MY houndstooth skirt...Yup, here: http://sheilaephemera.blogspot.com/2009/12/black-and-white-and-red-patterns-gogo.html .
ReplyDeleteThanks as always for doing Visible Monday!
Love the print combo. So clever. Thanks for swinging by and linking up on Monday Mingle. I'm going to join in the fun too!
ReplyDeleteLOVE your pattern mixing here! You look fabulous as usual:-) I also wore some faux fur today, but am now coveting yours!
ReplyDeleteLove this look on you Patti! And I have followed those same rules with boots - of course some outfits beg to break rules, but I think the books look fantastic with the length and fullness of your skirt!
ReplyDeleteOh, serendipity! Or great minds, or one of those happy coincidences -- thanks again, Sheila, you rock.
ReplyDeleteCharming outfit!! Facebook Twitter
ReplyDeleteOooh! Hooray for another Sheila item. She's the best. You are rocking that pattern mix. The houndstooth skirt is so fabulous, I love the length.
ReplyDeleteMy personal preference is a-ok if the skirt falls over the top of the boots - if - the ankle of the boots is slim enough, but then again, I've seen people wear awesome chunky boots and pull it off. It just depends.
I just got my Sheila goodies too and they fit !!!
