| Modeling in her youth. A classic 50's beauty. |
She's been working ever since, having signed a major contract in 1999 after appearing in Marie Claire (not a magazine geared to the over-60 set!). Daphne gets paid top dollar to pose for Moschino and Dolce & Gabbana, among others, and retains a cool elegance and confidence that transcends age.
She denies any surgical interventions, and says her long silver hair makes her stand out. “I’ve never had anything done to my face,” Selfe told the Daily Mail. “Not that poison, not a face-lift. I think it’s a waste of money. Anyway, I couldn’t afford it!” I rather doubt the can't-afford-it part, but bravo for the choice to age gracefully and naturally.
Age has also brought serenity, and increased self confidence. Daphne told a journalist for The Economist : “You’ve got to take rejection. I go to lots of auditions, and you only get one out of several, that’s how it is. . . . That’s quite difficult for young girls to get used to. But I’m old and sensible—or insensible now—so I don’t worry about it, and on to the next one.”
And she has a simple philosophy about getting older: "It's going to happen, so why worry? My generation got on with it. I do find people are always complaining these days. I try to remain cheerful, not grumpy." Rock on, Daphne Selfe, vital and beautiful at 83!

Wow - good for her to defy all expectations! x
ReplyDeleteI've met Daphne a couple of times - and actually worked with her back in the olden days when I was a fashion editor - she is a wonderful woman with a brilliant attitude.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting, TNMA. That must have been great fun.
ReplyDeleteSo BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Patti, for this brilliant post. Daphne is truly inspirational. I'm going to save this photo to remind me daily of what aging with confidence looks like. Her hair surrounds her beautiful face like a halo.
ReplyDeleteShe's still stunning, and her attitude is downright inspiring!!
ReplyDeleteMiss Daphne is surely aging beautifully. How old is she now?
ReplyDeleteBut then again, you are aging beautifully, too. =)
we should all be so blessed with a chin like that! She is lovely!
ReplyDeleteShe looks amazing in the photo with the long gray hair .Although I didn't know her name I recognised the face. Thanks Patti for showing women like her to us .We all need a bit of inspiration to go on.She is so right...ageing is going to happen anyway so why worry?
ReplyDeleteShe has a great attitude and isn't her hair gorgeous?
ReplyDeleteShe is gorgeous! And I like her brain too.
ReplyDeleteOh Patti! I love her and her philosophy! Off to tweet this...... It's just too good not to share! Hugs! Serene
ReplyDeleteThis just proves that beauty doesn't fade! I even think her hair has improved with age which can't be said about many ladies at 83!
ReplyDeleteShe's right -- it's all attitude. I used to fear aging but, now that I'm old, I simply embrace who I am.
ReplyDeleteI think she's got the right idea by keeping positive. You're only as happy as you want to be, and sometimes you gotta set your mindset right to get happy.
ReplyDeleteWonderfully said, SB.
ReplyDeleteI know! I would so love to have her hair at my relatively young age of 57!
ReplyDeleteShe's so stunning! LOVE her!

She's a great ambassador for all women - love that D&G used her in their campaign.
ReplyDeleteIf my curly hair will look like that when it turns grey, I will not cover it. She looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteI had not heard of Daphne Selfe, so thank you for posting. She's stunning! As my hair gets more and more grey, I've been letting it get longer (more as a reaction to losing all my hair a few years ago). I hope that when it has gone completely white it looks as lovely as hers.
ReplyDeleteI remember this woman! That, of course, dates me. But wasn't ... ISN"T she still ... amazing?
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI have heard of her and she's awesome. Beautiful.
