I was delighted by the
hair transformations of these midlife women, featured in the New York Times. No soccer-mom cuts for them! They went for edgy, modern looks usually worn by women 30 years their junior. (Click

None of these styles is exactly "me", and blue streaks won't pass muster in the corporate workplace, unless you're the CEO (yay for you!). But I love the daring, the breaking-the-rules, and the "Not Dead Yet" attitudes of these women.
How bold have you/would you go with your hairstyle? And how much is age a factor? Is there a hairstyle that you will not wear because you think it will "date" you?
When I had my number one cut several years ago, the only one to complain was my 6 year old grand daughter who wanted her Nana back.
ReplyDeleteI love the blue streaks.
ReplyDeleteI adored this article, which I first came across via WendyB. I wish everyone had the substantial privilege to be as bold as they pleased with their hair, and I'm so glad for these cultural shifts! I count myself among the very lucky to be freely bold - and nearly bald. :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to have dark purple streaks in my hair. Or have the whole bottom layer dyed purple. But, I'm not that bold and I'm kind of lazy so I don't think I'd keep up with it.
ReplyDeleteLove this post. I am so chicken when it comes to my hair though. I only go to a salon once every 6 months and I tell my stylist I do NOT want politically correct hair cut or color but I also do not wear any product in my hair and only will wash once a week to keep it as healthy as possible with its naturral oils. Yes old-fashioned when it comes to not slathering my hair with every new claim that comes on the market. Then at the end I say, I dont want it to look cheap. I also take a picture. Somehow all the crayon colors do not attract me and to get an avante garde cut in order for it to look like the pictures need mouse and gels etc to make it look right. So I end up with my bangs and blunt cut and call it a day. At least it is not fried with too many hightlights and looks somewhat silky when straightened. But it is always fun to see the new and different.
ReplyDeleteThese women look absolutely brilliant. I'm the world's worst at adventurous hair (other than dying it black) but admire those who have the guts to do something crazy! x
ReplyDeletei often think of a haircut even when the weather is windy and wet like it is now. but i am afraid that it would change my look considerably into a frumpy because i have curls and shortened they do even more what they want. i appreciate the sassy hairstyle of the ladies, each of them has her personal perfect look. probably i can try that too but that would mean a lot of preparations every day. i am not sure that i want that.
ReplyDeleteI've had my hair every color under the natural sun, plus blue, pink, and fire engine red. I've had long hair, I've chopped it all off. I honestly like it best a natural medium red with pink streaks, but the up keep is hard. So It's back to all red. I'm workng on growing it out. I love having bold hair, it's my favorite accessory.
ReplyDeleteI love the boldness of these hairstyles and how women are redefining what it means to become mature and act our ages. But I also respect women who choose a quieter path and let their boldness shine from within!
ReplyDeleteThese women look great - I'd love to have hair like them! When I was younger I had all sorts of colours. In fact it was red when I turned 40, and three years on. Before that I've had green streaks, pink and purple streaks, been permed, had long hair and extremely short hair. I've also suffered from some really bad haircuts! Now I'm trying not to look like I'm going bald!
ReplyDeleteI change my hair color often and try to keep it original and non "normal." Currently it's red with black and blonde streaks. My son calls me a bledhead. I'd love to have the courage to go white or pink but I'm not that bold.
ReplyDeleteMy hair is about 1/4" long. I really love it and get some nice comments from strangers every so often. I'm 56 years old, am tall, slim, with a long neck and a small head, so I think that is one reason I can pull off a haircut that short. My hair is very fine and I can't do much with it if I grow it out.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI always wanted to be one of those people who can pull off really crazy hair, like that first photo. But it's just not a good look on me :(
ReplyDeleteDangit! I HATE Disqus! It always screws up my comment postings!
ReplyDeleteI guess my hair is long for 58, or maybe not so much. My new electric rollers are just like the ones I had in high school and when I choose to use them, its a reminder of the Farrah look I liked back then. (I wish) I just know I hope to be 80 years old with highlights someday, no going natural gray or white for me. Some people look good that way but I prefer dye and hair products. Whatever you like or are brave enough for...
ReplyDeleteLOVE these 3 cuts! They're ROCKING it!

Once my bangs finish growing out enough for me to cut it all back to one length, I am strongly considering putting hot pink or blue streaks in it. The more edgy hairstyles I see on more mature women, the happier I am, so why not join in?
ReplyDeleteWhy not indeed? Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI've been blonde, red, dark brown and every hue in between, straight and permed, long and short.
ReplyDeleteI so want a turquoise streak but that won't fly at work.
I think my cut is pretty funky - I have my blonde streak (that used to be turquoise!) for fun.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing older women rocking these looks.
i adore Linda's choice!

I was a crazy punk back in the late 70s (okay still am) so I went through every colour and cut imaginable. I also worked as a hair and makeup artist, and you know what they say about hairdressers? They do every no-no imaginable, I think its a case of feeling like they have a handle on it? Anyway, last year at 51 I dyed my hair pink. I was bored, and it was such a happy colour. Seriously, people everywhere would stop me and say how pretty it was. Now I'm white blonde. I don't try for it, its just what happens when you start greying at 16 -- grey hair turns white when bleached. Keep saying I want to dye it pink again... maybe a few streaks...
ReplyDeleteI loved this article, the examples, everything!
ReplyDeleteHey Patti: like you, I live in a semi corporate world - thus the serious clothes and hair. I did have a buzz cut with fringe when I was younger ...
ReplyDeleteI kind of like the idea that if you're going to color your hair, make it totally obvious and on purpose :) I'm flirting with doing a red ombre on my ends. I think it will be a New Year's treat to myself once the sun-lightened summer bits have grown out.
ReplyDeleteLong hair makes me look older. I like my short bob!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the blue streaks on that 50 year old. She definitely OWNS that hairdo.
ReplyDeleteHi Patti!
ReplyDeleteHave hair mascara in pink! i wear it once in while -
Love it ! do not want to be plain
Love what the ladies did especially the blue streaks!
