The Award Shows: Glorious Women Of A Certain Age

I enjoy watching the entertainment awards shows, pieces of them anyway (I admit to snacking and chores during the speeches). I especially love to see Women of A Certain Age looking glorious in fab gowns, shoes and jewels. It's fantasy, not my life. Still fun to ogle and imagine.

The Golden Globes had eye-candy for us in the 45+ set:

The gorgeous Julianne Moore in Tom Ford.

Sally Field (Mrs. Lincoln) in Alberta Ferretti. Lovely.

And The Queen, Helen Mirren (in Badgley Mischka) can do no wrong.

I had a harder time finding age-peers at the SAG awards Sunday night. Perhaps because it's more television-oriented, and that's a younger set? But aren't there fabulous midlife women on television any more? Here are a couple of younger-midlifers who looked spendid, but I struggled to find any over 50:

Lovely 49 year-old Helen Hunt, wearing a Romona Keveza gown. Sparkles!

Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie) in a navy Chagoury gown. Love her darker hair.

Are you a fan of these flamboyant fests? If so, do you search the crowd for women of your own age, and enjoy their confident fabulous-ness?

  1. I love how we women of 'age' pare down our wardrobes as we enter midlife and wear straighter gowns and rely on the beauty of our faces to tell the world who we are.  These ladies are all just stunning!

  2. Helen is always divine. I hardly ever watch the shows but I love the easier compilation pieces in trashy magazines I find lying at work that sum it all up for me. I just like seeing the choices people make? Maybe the difference with a little age is that you make choices for different reasons - ones that are often a little more thoughtful. But I also like the fun and the faux-pas and the whacky!

  3. I rely on stylish bloggers like your good self to watch and pick out their favourites!  Good to see some gorgeous Botox-free ladies looking sexy and drop dead glam. Helen Mirren is stunning. x

  4. I am so bored by almost all award shows, I don't watch any. I just wait for blogs to post the looks and get my fill of fashion that way. These ladies look fab. Is it just me or does Helen Hunt look different? Almost unfamiliar... if you hadn't posted her name, I wouldn't have known who it was.

  7. I use to watch .. but not so much anymore.  I really like to flip through the dresses on line (quick, easy and no commercials).

  8. Since I don't watch any award shows, I haven't seen any of the red carpet looks! But these 5 women all look fabulous. Helen Mirren is astonishingly beautiful. xxxx

  10. I do love seeing post-award show pictures. I think the older ladies often dress so much better than the younger lot. I'd never have any place in my life to wear a full length gown, but it is fun to imagine!

  12. I'm not so keen on Sally Fields. It's just too sweet and frothy for me.  I prefer the other dresses that are sleeker and less ruffly.

  18. Hey there! I know this is somewhat off topic

but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this
    site? I'm getting tired of

Wordpress because I've had issues with hackers and I'm looking at alternatives for another platform. I

would be awesome if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.

  19. I didn't even watch the SAG awards, I'm a Golden Globe/Oscar gal and that's it.  Oh Helen Mirren, you can do no wrong.  This weekend I saw The Debt and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and it was so refreshing to see two movies with fantastic roles for women over 50 in them.  TV may be lagging, but I'm seeing a change in movies for the better!

  20. Hi there! They all look so lovely, my favourite outfit/dress has to be Helen Mirren, she looks stunning! A great post! x

  21. I wait for the recap slideshows on the 'net because the award shows are fairly boring. I tend to look more for good taste in the gowns, regardless of the age of the wearer. I love Edie Falco's Chagoury but it would've been stunning on Jennifer Lawrence, too.

  22. I never watch any of these shows - but I do love seeing these women looking so fabulous in their incredible gowns. I can't pick one over the other, they're all fantastic!

  23. I think the "older" ladies always look better than the younger set. Maybe with age comes experience and confidence in themselves and what works for them They may not be so reliant on what a "stylist" advises for them.
    Helen Mirren just ROCKS!!
