Gentle Clothing Care - Tips to Share?

Source

The average US family spends between 3 and 4% of its total budget on clothing. The 2011 median income of US households was $50,000, so that's $1,500 - $2,000 on average. (Your mileage may vary, considerably. My household spends a little more.)

If we splash out this much money annually, we probably want to take good care of our clothing and accessories. I was fairly ruthless with my clothes in my youth. I worked for large corporations, wore "corporate" clothes, and sent most things out to the dry cleaners regularly - very tough on fabrics and the environment.

I've learned how to baby my clothes over the years. Not only do they last longer, they retain that fresh look and feel longer, and therefore remain more flattering. I have seen the difference between a black tee that's been manhandled and one that's been coddled.

Here are a few of my clothing care techniques. No doubt you have some too. Please share in the comments, we have no secrets here ☺
  • I wash almost all my clothes in cold water. (Well, in Florida the water's pretty tepid most of the year). I have no trouble getting my lightly-worn items fresh and clean this way. Sheets, towels, and workout clothes get the warm water bath.
  • I use about one-half the recommended amount of laundry detergent. It's plenty to get everyday clothing clean, and it's gentler on fabrics.
  • I turn all my tops and washable skirts inside out, to minimize fabric-rub. Same for jeans.
  • Bras and other delicates go in a zippered lingerie bag.
  • Lessons learned the hard way: zip all the zippers before you wash. Those little teeth can chew.
  • "Nice" things go in the dryer for only 10 - 15 minutes, on medium-low heat. Then I take them out, shake, and hang them in the bathroom. It's dryer heat that really wears down fabric. I take this opportunity to gently stretch jeans that are (ahem) a little snug.
  • Easy to say, harder to do: don't crowd clothing in the closet; give pieces a little space to breathe so they don't wrinkle. On their no-wire-hangers, naturally.
  • I only recently re-discovered the joys of a good shoe repair shop. Now I get my favorite shoes and boots polished and re-heeled when they start looking worn. It's like getting new shoes for $20, and already broken in!

Over to you - do you have a tip to share for clothing care?

  1. Patti I share all of your tips except the shoes, though I have been looking for a good shoeshop near me to have my favorite pair of wedges re-heeled. I also use the fluff feature on my dryer & then hang my clothes to air dry. I find that if I put them in the dryer (for a few minutes) I'll forget about them & then I have to wash all over again because they've soured.

  2. I line dry most everything except jeans and socks. And aren't lingerie bags the best thing ever?? I even wash my cashmere in the washer (in a lingerie bag, cold water, on the gentle cycle, and with The Laundress cashmere wash). It's true that you only need about half the recommended laundry soap/detergent.

  3. I love your tips! Mine would be: you really don't need to wash things as often as you think, especially items that aren't worn close to "hot spots". I rarely wash skirts or jackets - a good airing out is usually all they need. I use a spot cleaner if needed. When I do wash, I do it on cold, and dry on delicate if the item isn't too delicate (never tights or bras!)

  4. I do everything you list here. I've never actually dry cleaned a thing in my life. I wash sweaters in dawn soap, roll them up in a dry towel, then lay flat to dry *if wool*. Pretty much everything else gets chucked into a cold wash and either hung dry or done on a the quickest dryer setting. Newer machines seem to run so much longer than the old top loaders, so I wash on quick wash. It takes care of everything just fine.

I am definitely a fan of shoe repair, they can work miracles.

  5. I hand wash and line dry tights and they last for years!
Most of my "ethnic" stuff gets hand washed as well (Mexican huipils, Indian skirts, scarves).
I like to use the dryer long enough to remove lint + cat hair and then line dry.
I'm lucky -- soCal sun, low humidity. Nothing like the fresh smell of line dried stuff.

  6. Hi Patti! How appropriate. I'm doing some laundry at this very minute. How's that for a glamorous Friday night?

I do pretty much everything that you mentioned. I wash all of my clothes in cold water on the gentle cycle. I use Tide Total Care detergent, the one that featured Tim Gunn in its ads. It's supposed to protect fabrics, prevent pilling, and reduce fading. Probably a bunch of hype but I like it. Because much of my wardrobe is thrifted, I am willing to take my chances on washing silks, linen, and cashmere that are labeled Dry Clean Only. So far, I haven't had any problems! For clothes that must be dry cleaned, I have used Dry Cleaner's Secret to freshen and reduce the number of trips to the dry cleaner.

I keep a Tide to Go pen in my purse at all times to immediately take care of any spots or spills. For more challenging stains, I highly recommend Carbona Stain Devils. There are 9 different formulas that are formulated to target certain types of stains. In other words, what removes mustard is completely different from what works on grass stains. They are much more effective than multi-purpose stain removers like Shout. You can buy them at Walmart or online at Amazon.

The only clothes that I put in the dryer are my jeans. Everything else is hung up to dry. If you don't like to iron, Downy Wrinkle Releaser works very well on knits. Spray lightly, smooth, and watch the wrinkles disappear!

I am anxious to try a tip that was passed on to me recently by a cashier at Ross. I was buying a pair of black jeans for my daughter. The cashier told me to soak them overnight in white vinegar and water to set the dye. She said it helps prevent black clothing from fading. Apparently, soaking them in salt water will do the same thing. Has anyone tried this and, if so, how did it work for you?

  7. Good tips, and I do most of these already. Definitely use less detergent than recommended, I use the hand wash and fluff cycles a lot and then hang things. I usually use cold water. I need to get a lingerie bag though.

I would love to have a handy shoe-shine place to go to, but I have to do that myself. In Seattle there were guys on the street who would do it in about two minutes for whatever you wanted to pay. My boots always looked good when I lived there!

  8. Thank you Patti  for your good tips. I wash dresses, skirts, jackets and sweaters ony after I have worn them several times. I try to wash everything in the washer but with cold water. Mostly it works well. Some of the sweaters I only handwash of course. Fortunately I have a real shoe maker near by he repairs my shoes perfectly. To protect them against wrinkles I padded the toe caps up with paper and I use shoe trees when I store them for the next season.

  9. Thanks for sharing, Patti.
I wasn't aware of the zipper thing - great tip.
Recently I found an "old school" cobbler in my area (hard enough to find!) and I am so grateful for his work.
My mother always told me to wash inside out. I have a lot of dark clothes and use liquid detergent only. After a while black and dark blue tends to fade and I re-colour it in the washing machine - easy and no mess at all, except I don't do white laundry right afterwards.

  10. I tent to put items in the dryer to reduce wrinkles when they are dry - I set my kitchen timer to remind me.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I use soap nuts in my wash, they are eco-friendly and last for ages.
I always line dry or dry on a clothes horse in front of the fire - we only use our inherited tumble drier in winter for bedding & towels.
Sheila's spot in, I don't wash everything after one wear. I'll hang up my clothing to air it before putting it away and spot clean any marks. x

    ReplyDelete
  12. For my darks, I use Woolite for dark fabrics. My washing machine as a "hand wash" setting and I use that a lot. I wash my bra separate from everything else using that hand wash setting. Then I let them air dry in the bathroom. Thanks for the reminder about turning clothes inside out.

  13. I've had some shrinkage problems recently so I've laid off throwing everything in the dryer automatically.  I totally second your thoughts about less detergent.  I got caught walking in a downpour one morning and as I continued my exercise I noticed that my workout pants were foaming.  It was leftover soap from the washer!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I so agree with you about taking a little extra care with our things to make them last longer and closer to the original condition. It took me a while but I got out of the habit of throwing everything I wore at the end of the day into the wash. Under garments, socks/tights and vests, yes but the outer wear I try to hang up to air and wear at least once again unless they are dusty or otherwise obviously dirty. My jeans are rotated frequently so don't get washed too often either. With dry cleaning stuff, I avoid buying those clothes for a start but for jackets and coats again I rotate and air frequently and sponge clean as required (rarely). The handwash function on my washing machine is a lifesaver for my more delicate things including fine knits and silks. I do not use a tumble drier and haven't for many years, only when all my kids were tiny. I really don't like them even though I live in UK!
Oh, moth balls are a must too! You can get them with a nice scent these days and sealed so they don't touch your clothes. I throw them in drawers, closets and keep them in the pockets of stored coats and jackets.

A good cobbler is a must! But in between actual reheeling/resoling, I condition and polish all my boots and shoes myself with a cream called Blackrock (had to order from USA and is good enough for my fine leather bags) and you can waterproof the leather with another cream called Obernauf (again available in USA) which should only cost a few $ from a hardware store and lasts a long time. I was amazed at how lovely the leathers turn out and keep!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I also do most of what you listed as well.  But I almost always wash my clothes on gentle, cold water and air dry.  I also use eco-friendly detergent and lately have been adding baking soda to some of my loads, especially my whites.

Thank you for your tips!  I need to turn my items inside out...that's a good one.

  16. Great minds think alike, Patti. I also use Dryel for most of my "Dry Clean Only" garments.

I don't have a drier though so everything is line dried.

  20. Seconding comments on airing your 'clerty' stuff (aka it's not freshly clean, it's not dirty). Unless it is underwear, tights or a cotton top, I tend to get at least a second wear this way.

The best thing I have found for drying delicate jumpers flat after handwashing is a muslin/net-frame thing, that hangs on the line with multiple layers. Drys jumpers really quickly wuth no musty smell.

  23. I am like Desiree in the packed tight wardrobe! But I follow most of the tips you and your readers suggest. I definitely don't wash things after only one wear, unless I have managed to spill something down myself (which happens more than you might think...)
And most things which say you should dry clean only are perfectly fine in the machine on a cold or cool wash and a low spin cycle. I don't have a tumble drier, and look forward to drier and warmer days when I can get clothes out of the washing line. xxxx

  24. Stain removal tip, a day late, and I have got *turmeric* stains out of my husband's white shirts with this: OxyClean paste, applied lightly, then into the wash with more OxyClean and the usual detergent. Hang to dry in bright sunlight, as long as it takes. Sunshine is like a miracle cure for so many non-greasy stains I can't even believe it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hello, I do lots of the things already mentioned. I wash my leather garments (have even done it for friends who were going to get rid of jackets because they couldn't afford an extortionate dry cleaners bill). I put the garment in the washing machine on the shortest, coolest and gentlest spin programme, using shampoo and some fabric or hair conditioner in that part of the programme. The clean garments are taken out  and put on a coat/jacket hanger or a clip hanger for skirts (put some padding under the clips). Make sure the garments have been re-shaped and hang outside in the fresh air out o strong sunlight.

    ReplyDelete
  26.  I have to give an enthusiastic second to The Laundress cashmere & wool shampoo (and delicate wash)!  Best stuff ever.  The only thing that goes to the dry cleaner these days are my husband's suits, and that's just because he's too chicken to let me try one in the washer.

And I keep upping the amount of regular stuff that gets washed in cold & hung to dry - at this point it's about 90% of my family's wardrobe!  (Underwear & socks still get warm water & tossed in the dryer, but that's about it.)

  56. One modification I'd suggest is hand-washing your bras. Putting them in a lingerie bag will stop the wires from destroying your washing machine, but detergents are very bad for the elastic material in bras.

It's simple to handwash your bras: set them to soak in a bucket with soap made especially for delicate fabrics (like Forever New or Soak) or another gentle soap. After about 10 minutes, rinse them out. At this point I like to put them in a salad spinner to get the water out so they dry faster, but you can also pat them dry with a towel. Lay them flat on a drying rack to dry.
